International Rescue represent me for illustration jobs... They are lovely folks, and their blog and the other artists on their roster are worth browsing any time.

Our photoshoot for the painting was done with all the technical sophistication of the mac 'photobooth'. ... not dissimilar to the photoshoot for the Magic singles from her last album, which we did on photobooth and skype chat while on opposite sides of the globe. Pip is holding an old Agfa Click in this image, and this alludes to the theme of the music video for Black,White And Blue. The video and indeed the single will be release February 19th (I think...), but in the mean time there are some sneaky live performances on youtube yo can check out.

New Ladyhawke artwork for ANXIETY

Wow, this has been so long on the burner that I really forgot to post about the artwork as soon as it was released in December - the artwork and album title that is, the album comes out in March (pre-order it here).

I am very proud of the artwork I did for the Ladyhawke official website too... getting my head around the design requirements was the tough part, but then what the brain and hand spewed forth were a surprising success.

At the moment im busting a gut to get the album package finished... there are a few more original bits and pieces to adorn that of course, which should have been done weeks ago... but summer holidays in New Zealand took priority!

But for now, up the top is a look at the cover of the new Ladyhawke album - 'Anxiety'.

Her watercolour paintings are a little bit gritty, a little bit cheeky, and intriguingly beautiful. No matter what words I use to describe her work, visual artist SARAH LARNACH is a true artistic genius!

I'm sure you've probably caught yourself looking at her illustrations before, for example: LADYHAWKE's album and singles covers, as well as featuring in the music video for 'My Delirium'. Scrolling through her blog, I find the rest of Larnach's work really mesmerizing, including a seriously cool Halloween costume from last year.

After spending a few years in the land of Oz, the talented Larnach has returned to the place she calls home, right here in little old New Zealand! Upon discovering this little piece of information, I think I will now proceed to stalk her. Who wouldn't? She loves dinosaurs...

COUP DE MAIN: Was art and illustration always something you wanted to pursue as a career?
SARAH LARNACH: Yes. I wanted to be an artist when I was young, but my mum, an artist, made me promise not to be one. I wasn't aware of creative jobs growing up, so I didn't really look into anything else in 'the arts'. Consequently, I was pretty lost when I left school and after much trial and error and time wasted, I found myself at art school in my twenties - it felt really good to excel at something, so I kept going. After that, 'work' just kept finding me; exhibitions, my work with Ladyhawke, the support of a patron (Element skateboards, through their Eden advocates programme), an agent (International Rescue)... and now the galleries are getting fancier, and the album art requests keep coming, and I'm feeling very lucky to have this as my job. BUT if this art thing doesn't work out, I'm going to study paleontology and hypothesize new visions of how dinosaurs might have appeared, because there are some details we will never know for sure.

Fleet Foxes cover for VOLUME mag

A few weeks ago I was asked if I'd like to do a cover for a new music publicaion - VOLUME magazine. Of course I said "sure thing" and then as these things happen, on Wednsday of last week a got a phone call "So, how about doing a Fleet Foxes image for us... and we need it in 5 days time".

Long story short; I did it. I'm pooped. This kind of thing usually takes me two weeks. The magazine went to print 12 hours after the painting was finished. and if youre in New Zealand you can get a copy. if youre elsewhere, you can look at the issue online-

Giant Moa Has A Giant Wishbone -painting, being auctioned online for charity

Christchurch, New Zealand, suffered some devastating earthquakes earlier this year. And now its freezing with the worst winter storms in 70 years. People still need charity down there, and my painting is being auctioned to help out! please take a look and maybe bid! (Watercolour and gold ink on 600gsm paper. 39cm wide x 56cm high)

The giant moa has been extinct for about 250 years, but these massive birds were once the worlds largest. I've painted this moa in the style of a museum taxidermy guide, for my Wonder Cabinet (Wunderkammer) series. This is the first original piece in this series to go up for sale.*
The special detail in this painting is the wishbone (which would be about 50cm tall on a Moa) - symbolically painted in gold, for hope and good wishes.

I drew the original a few months back specifically for the LIFE exhibition which opened in London on Friday. Those are dinosaurs and Pterodactyls in the picture, hanging out at the birth of a new volcano. I've likely got my mesozoic eras mixed up, but hey, it's not from a photographic reference

Its about £50, edition of 20, and is on beautiful creamy paper to match the style of the image.

Lets just say youre in London... you should go to this opening on July 1st! I wont be there (i'm under house arrest in my studio until i finish the new Ladyhawke album cover)... but you can buy a VERY WELL PRICED print of mine, or one from a slew of Australian talents being showcased there.

...i took part in their disposable cameras around the world project - and there's heaps of more interesting stuff in there too!
Story Magazine is a new arts and culture ["raw creative exploration"] magazine being produced in the UK, by two New Zealand ... 'do-ers' (?) . Is that what you call them? people who are always 'doing' great things?
At any rate, great things are expected from this new publication, and given the quality of this first issue, couple with the reputations behind it, I would expect nothing less than a runaway success.

The first issue is available in digital now, and out in paper in the next week i believe.

Its nice to know people are blogging my work, even if im not!

Today I was delighted to get and email from Pan Dizajn who has had a My Delirium tattoo in my Ladyhawke font permenantly added to his body! wonderful!

I dont think I have shown these other tattoos in my blog before, so here is one that the Newcastle (England) tattooist, Martin, sent me of one of my wolves-

...and this is the first one i ever saw. I'm sorry but I was sent the photo 2 or 3 years ago on Myspace, and i cant recall the name of the recipient,thought i think it was in the South-West U.S.A. somewhere.

Are there any more? i wonder.

WWF, or The World Wildlife Fund, is doing a bit of a campaign to get New Zealanders to think about how important our ocean is to us. A few well-known kiwis have lent their faces or art skills to the cause, and in my case, I once again painted my good buddy Pip Brown/Ladyhawke! If you're here on the shaky isles, keep an eye out for the rest of the series; Otis and Dick Frizzell have portrayed one another, and Anna Paquin and Bill Manhire have their mugs out too.
Oh! and this is all to kick-off a WWF competition for creatives to show their love of the ocean, so if you are an arty NZ resident, you can win some stuff!

ProDesign \\ Sarah, how did you get into illustration?
Sarah Larnach \\ Two years ago I found myself simultaneously making ‘fan art’ portraits for a book by Amanda Maxwell, and embarking on the My Delirium Video for Ladyhawke. It didn’t occur to me that these were ‘illustration jobs’, perhaps because they were collaborative, rather than being client initiated. The directors on the ‘My Delirium’ video for Ladyhawke had a background in illustration, and working with them showed me that there was more to illustration than I was aware of. In London on that project, it seemed like everyday I was being asked what agency I was with, and what other jobs I had done. Illustration wasn’t something I had really thought about, but it reached out and grabbed me by the throat....

Every year Becks does an artist edition of their standard beer bottle, where they switch up the classic Becks label for an artist designed label, for their whole spring release. I have only just realised that I hadn't posted anything about this here. So, without further ado- here are some of the images that I painted for this! I dont know exactly what image was used where, as I left the UK the day after the launch party... and they've still not forwarded me the container if brew I requested :-)

All profits are going to Oxfam's Haiti appeal... and since almost every step (advertising, postage, labour) has been donated, the profit % is huge. This is my Angel design (below). The tees are about $20 NZ, so are a bit of a bargain for any tee... think of it as a small donation with a wearable cotton thank-you note.

Ten BACK OF THE VAN Covers the public never saw

Once upon a time... a few months ago, we made a top secret special batch of covers for Ladyhawke's Back Of The Van. Or more correctly, I went nuts painting ten individual special one-off original never-to-be-repeated [checks thesaurus...] unique exclusive 7" single covers for Back Of The Van.

The Triceratops might be my favourite...

If a T-Rex' wasnt scary enough, on halloween it might dress as a ghost to freak you out.

...but i like these two guys (above and below) a lot too!

These were painted straight onto special pre-made 7" covers.

I only messed up about 4 attempts, so now I have most of a box of blank 7" covers. I use them for grocery lists. or i put my fingers inside one, and my thumb into another, and pretend my hand is a duck-billed Hadrosaur.

I got given a second shot at a couple of singles, and in the space that passed since the original releases, Pip and I both got a little darker, and I got braver and less 'particular'... these are examples of what we came up with.

This howling dude became a stage backdrop thing.

...and this guy is the original wolf painting, I drew him on new years day 2009, on an island in New Zealand, while deflecting my monkey nieces with quick drawings of elephants that they could colour in. It was a rad family colouring-in session.

And then came the Back Of The Van dinosaur series for a re-release... 'um, nice...but what have dinosaurs got to do with Ladyhawke?' they said. 'EVERYTHING!' we repiled.

I thought it would be a great idea to create the album booklet as one continuous image, one where the end matches up with the beginning, so you could effectively put it on a loop and watch it forever! As it turned out, I was the only one who was enthusiastic about this idea, so the booklet exists as pages, and I am left with an un-frame-able painting over two metres long,

Published in late 2008 by Serps Press in Australia. A collection of breathtaking stories about teen angst and growing up in New Zealand and Australia. Amandas stories are beautiful. I hope she publishes her poems too... theyre short and suh-weet!

Once I had what i thought was a greaaat idea for a ladyhawke video, so I wrote a treatment and gave it to her 'people'. they didnt go for it... i was bummed out, but that didnt stop me from dreaming that one day I would help make a video for her. And then one day... I did! I went to London and worked with Frater; a couple of rad directors by the names of Benji and Jim, at the Partizan Studio. These are a few of my contributions to the project!

I graduated from Diploma of Visual Arts course at R.M.I.T. Tafe, Melbourne, Australia in 2004. graduating was a bit hit-and-miss for a while there... more because of my distracting fondness for beer than due to any lack of enthusiasm for school. These are some of the images that helped me graduate.
